Matt Panayides former release focused more on electronic guitar. It’s refreshing to hear a more acoustic approach on this album. They open with Frank Foster’s tune, “Simone,” arranged as a jazz waltz.
As a guitarist, Panayides brings his own style to the forefront, with adventurous harmonics and a clean, post bebop sound, Matt brings back memories of Jim Hall and Pat Martino. You clearly hear this during their swinging arrangement of “Straight up and Down” by Chick Corea. Drummer, Anthony Pinciotti gives a smashing solo on this up-tempo tune. This is followed by the very beautiful composition, “I Fall in Love Too Easily.”
On the Cedar Walton composition, “Hindsight” bassist Steve LaSpina takes a noteworthy solo, as does Pinciotti letting his drum skills shine. Panayides plays Henri Mancini’s famed “Moon River” tune solo and with great emotion, letting his talent sparkle across my listening room like stardust.
This delightful blend of standard songs and wonderful arrangements creates an album truly enjoyable and entertaining. The repertoire is a perfect blend of swing, ballads, and bebop. Always at the forefront are the amazing talents of Matt Panayides on guitar. This is an album I will enjoy playing time and time again.
