The Obvious Invisible
Mr. Mudshow Music
Emily Duff has for a longtime, been part of the New York City’s musical community. She has always been comfortable with her genre dysphoria. Duff recorded her album debut in 2017 on Mod Prom Records, and followed-up with two independent releases before recording her last album 2021’s “Razor Blade Smile” also on Mr. Mudshow Music. She returns to her roots on “The Obvious Invisible” with a particular nod to 70’s psychedelic folk rock.
Produced by John Jackson at Studio G in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, N.Y.C. all of the songs are written by Duff. Her ensemble includes Jackson on violin, mandolin, and Git-Sitar; Benny Landa, electric guitar; Lenny Kaye, pedal-steel guitar; James Maddock, Acoustic guitar and backing vocals; Jacob Wunderlich, Harmonium; Skip Duff, Udu; John Lattanzi, bass; and Greg Wieczorek, drums.
On the lead track “Dangerous” Duff reminds the listener that free-thinking women are dangerous. “She Never Loved Me” features the fabulous horn section of Danny Ray, sax and flute; and Indofunk Satish, trumpet; while Charlie Giordano plays the Hammond B-3 and accordion; and Bryn Roberts, piano.
“Let The Wind” features Duff as she beautifully sings the lyric “I am so tired, fighting the breeze…let the wind take me away”. On “Come on Love” Duff chimes “we’ll find a way…keep on pushin’ straight ahead…come on over, open up your heart, we’ll find a way”. “Brief Insight” is a short instrumental interlude.
“She”, “I take after my mother, but I look like my father, she said yes, I take after my mother…maybe she’s workin’ way too hard”. On the psychedelic “Didn’t we, feel the earth move under our feet, oh didn’t we…see for miles and miles, and miles, no words of advice, on that we can agree, didn’t we”. On the title track “The Obvious Invisible” Duff declares “take my hand, come with me…close your eyes and look inside…I see everything”.
“Amazing Light” includes some great B-3 and accordion from Giordano and the lyric “shine on me…for a thousand years we wandered along, show me the way, amazing light, shine on me. “Every Sweet Thing”, “I deserve more than your offering, I deserve every sweet thing”. “Gonna Shake”, “oh babe, pretty baby, our love is gonna shake” once again with horns. On the closer “Luck” Duff chants “I’m wishing on a star…with a little luck we won’t crash this car…we won’t fall apart”.
The twelve songs are stripped-down and laid bare, if we choose to open our eyes. On “The Obvious Invisible” the magical Emily Duff sees everything.
