JAKE LECKIE
PLANTER OF SEEDS
Independent Label
Jake Leckie, bass/composer; Nadav Peled, guitar; Cathlene Pineda, piano; Beth Goodfellow, drums; Randal Fisher, tenor saxophone; Darius Christian, trombone.
The title tune is melancholy but gets a bright push from the drums of Beth Goodfellow. Randal Fisher and Darius Christian sing the melody on trombone and tenor saxophone in harmony. The underlying introduction reminds me a little bit of an Ahmad Jamal arrangement.
This is the way Jake Leckie’s third album release begins. He has composed all eight songs with tracks that explore what beauty can come tomorrow from the seeds we plant today. Track two is “Big Sur Jade” and Jake Leckie introduces the tune on his double bass, pulling the rich deep tones to the surface with precise fingers. He soon sets the tempo and Cathlene Pineda joins the groove on piano, letting her chords set the mood. This tune swings and the tenor saxophone is king. On “Clear Skies” guitarist Nadav Peled is given free rein. He races onto the scene with exuberance, showing off his technical prowess and creatively soloing. Providing a rhythm guitar base, Darius Christian enters to showcase his excellence on trombone. This composition and arrangement is more Straight-ahead fire and fury, with Goodfellow’s drums pushing the group ahead with determination.
Jake Leckie is clearly a fine composer. On the tune “Santa Teresa” he takes a solo and shows off his skills as a master bassist too. This music may inspire you to ponder the seeds you are sowing and the beauty that may blossom into your life as part of your own legacy.
