Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Chris Robeson

Chris Robeson, an enigmatic Texas songwriter based in Austin, is poised to unveil his debut album “Euphoriphobia” in July 2024. Harboring a cache of nearly 1000 songs and several unreleased records, Robeson has spent decades writing and recording in solitude, but is now ready to share his music with the world.

Rooted in influences spanning John Prine, Ween, Roger Miller, Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt, and Kris Kristofferson, Robeson’s work combines musical pastiche with candid lyricism. He approaches songwriting with an actor’s spirit, crafting vignettes of human experience through a kaleidoscope of characters and voices.

Though Robeson has tapped a wellspring of endlessly inventive song crafting, the now 37-year life path leading to this motherlode, has not been without its travails. A long series of false starts, broken hearts, detours and existential crises came well before he fully committed to following the path of his restless and prolific muse.

Despite facing severe depression and health issues, Robeson’s unwavering dedication to songwriting has persisted since his teenage years. His journey has transformed his music into both a lifeline and a pursuit of unapologetic authenticity.

Sometimes tongue-in-cheek and often eclectic, Robeson’s narrative and genre-bending style oscillates between humor and poignancy. Writing from a place of isolation, anxiety, and substance abuse, he offers solace to those experiencing similar lows, wishing for redemption, understanding, and connection.

Collaborating with producer Gabriel Rhodes, “Euphoriphobia” is full of introspective and emotive songs exploring the idea of happiness as a drug. This collection, including self-help songs and tributes to loved ones lost to suicide during the pandemic, dives into deep emotions without prescribing solutions.

As “Euphoriphobia” prepares for its release, Robeson stands ready to share his personal and sonically unique creations, aiming to provoke laughter, tears, and perhaps a hint of irritation, but ultimately leaving an undeniable impression on those who listen.
