The multi-award winning Doug Duffey And Badd are a North Louisiana-based quartet specializing in 100% original Bluesiana Bayou and Delta Soul Music.
Influenced by old school Memphis soul classics, and New Orleans R&B, they’ve recycled it all into their own recipe. “Ain’t Goin’ Back” is the band’s fourth studio album. A member of the Northeast Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, their songs have charted on Billboard, Cashbox, and Record World. The band has spent the last 32 years performing in the States, and in Europe. Duffey’s songs have been recorded by many other artists including Marcia Ball, George Clinton, and Rare Earth.
The ensemble for the album includes Duffey, all lead vocals and keyboards; his writing partner Dan Sumner on guitar, bass, trumpet, and background vocals; Ben Ford, bass; and Adam Ryland, drums. Dave Moore is featured on harmonica; along with a horn section including Jonathan Patterson, trombone, and Bert Windham, trumpet. They kick the album off with “Whirlpool” as Duffey sings “I’m lying on the bed but I just can’t sleep…my mind be like a whirlpool that’s just swimming round and round”. On “You Got What It Takes” Duffy chimes “oh, baby, you got the way and you got the moves…to take everything I got”, while playing some great organ.
“The Wishing Game ” opens with Sumner finger-picking and Duffey singing “but he loves somebody and he would never be true to you…but we both persisted in playing the wishing game…no one’s to blame at all”. The energetic “Rock It All Night” features Moore on harmonica, and the lyric “the house is jumpin’ everybody’s rollin’ all night”. “Front Porch Blues” again with Moore on harp, “the sun is going down and the night is coming on, the moon is slowly rising while I sit here all alone…in my old rockin’ chair, I hear a train in the distance but I ain’t goin’ nowhere”.
On “Get’ Er Outa Yo Head” Duffey belts out “got a pistolin your pocket, got a butcher knife in your boot…if you don’t end this bad trip you gonna’ find yourself dead”. “Turn It Around”, “I got to change my situation, got to turn my way of thinkin’ around”. “No Mercy” is another rockin’ tune featuring Duffey with some great piano. On “Promised Land” Duffey chants “I sit outside the station, an open ticket in my hand, I ain’t got no destination just looking for the promised land…I met an angel in the Delta but got grounded in Greenville”.
“Gallus Pole”, again with Moore on harp, as Duffey croons “I got no silver, I ain’t got no gold…I mortgaged my soul to rock n’ roll”. On the closer, the title track, “Ain’t Goin’ Back”, Duffey serenades “I ain’t goin’ back not even in chains, to that two room shack filled with misery and pain…I’d rather drink Muddy Water, live in a hollow log”.
The energetic Duffey continues to move forward as he was just honored with a historical marker on the Northeast Louisiana Music Trail. Doug Duffey And Badd are “Ain’t Goin’ Back”.
