Ping Rose is a singer and “guitar anti-hero” from Memphis, Tennessee. Using the blues as a vehicle his musical styling is melody meets story in a guitar laden fairytale. Blending his influences including Hendrix, George Benson, B.B. King, Jerry Reed, and Prince with rock groups The Cure and Smashing Pumpkins he churns his own spacey funky alternative rock. He creates music that is foreign yet familiar. His laundry list of collaborations includes Crystal Shawanda, Alicia Keys, and others. He is known for his high energy live show with his band The Anti-Heroes. “Conjure Man” is his follow-up recording to his first album “Sketchbook”.
Ping Rose opens “Conjure Man” with a greasy but fabulous instrumental, as he is accompanied by a strong rhythm section of bass and drums. “Don’t Drink Me Dry” is a funky tune with great electric guitar and a vocal dripping with honey as he sings “scratch me baby, up and down my leg”. The title track “Conjure Man” is a slower lowdown blues “sometimes I wonder if they dream of me…I’m the one who walks the earth”, sung with the addition of some fine piano.
“Should I” is a spacious song with a ska beat, the sound of horns probably comes from a synthesizer. “I want to look you in the eye, and tell you I love you”, as Ping Rose takes his solo. “Salty” sports some excellent organ and the lyric “this whole wide world is in pain…she was rotten to the core”. Another funky beat and a beautifully sung vocal highlight “Careful What You Wish For”.
“Much Left To Lose” is a walkin’ blues with some great finger-picking “I woke up early in the morning…they say I should leave, kick you to the curb…I ain’t got much left to loose”. The closer opens with handclaps and a Wes Montgomery styled sound…some snappy snare drumming highlights this fine instrumental.
