Johnny Burgin attended The University of Chicago to study writing but soon fell into the Chicago Blues scene. His first professional gig was backing the vocalist Taildragger. Burgin later toured with both Pinetop Perkins and Sam Lay. He also worked with many others including Eddie C. Campbell, Jimmy Dawkins, Eddie Shaw, Little Arthur Duncan, Jimmy Burns and Eddy Clearwater. Burgin a.k.a. Rockin’ Johnny formerly recorded for the Delmark Records label. After being in Chicago for twenty-eight years he left for the west coast where he recorded three albums including 2015’s “Greetings From Greaseland” with Kid Andersen.
“Ramblin’ From Coast To Coast” was recorded in Memphis, Dallas, Rochester, and Cincinnati and also mixed and mastered at Greaseland studios by Andersen. All songs were written by Burgin except for two. Burgin also plays guitar on all tracks and sings on all but two. Because Burgin recorded from “coast to coast” nineteen musicians were utilized. On piano are Christian Dozzler, Ben Levin, Hanna PK, and Barry Seelen. On bass are John Hay, Mike Morgan and Chris Matheos. On drums are Danny Banks, Rao Casey, David Plouffe, and Shorty Starr; while on 2nd guitar is Jad Tario and Dylan Bishop.
The only two songs not written by Burgin are the lowdown blues “Silently Suffering” written by Billy Flynn; and “Vacation From The Blues” written by Eddie Boyd. Boyd takes the vocal on “I’m Playing Straight”; while the vocal on “Older and Wiser” features Rae Gordon.
Every track is a gem but my favorites include the title track; “Gettin’ My Blues On” featuring backing vocalists Lisa Leuscher, Marina Crouse, and Jill Dinean; and Cincinnati Boogie with Burgin on slide guitar.
This new album on Straight Shooter Records is a Chicago blues album which showcases Burgin’s deep roots. Sit back, have a drink, and enjoy this new album from Johnny Burgin.
