Nick Gravenities has never won a Blues Music Award but has been inducted into the Blues Music Hall of Fame twice. In 1976 he was co-producer, with Otis Rush, of the “Right Place, Wrong Time” album on Bullfrog Records. In 2006 the album The Paul Butterfield Blues Band was inducted and Gravenities was songwriter of the lead track “Born In Chicago”.
Gravenities was born in Chicago but his parents were from Greece. After his father died he was enrolled at St.John’s Northwestern Military Academy but was expelled before graduation. He attended the University of Chicago where he met Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield, he became a Blues fan and studied the guitar. In 1967 he formed the Electric Flag with Bloomfield.
Gravenities patronized clubs where Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy and others played. He co-wrote the title track off Butterfield’s second album and the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Gravenities helped San Francisco bands like Quicksilver Messenger Service and Janis Joplin’s Kozmic Blues Band. He wrote several songs for Joplin including “Work Me Lord” and the instrumental “Buried Alive in the Blues”.
Gravenities has toured with both the “Chicago Blues Reunion” and with a new Electric Flag Band. On this new album Gravenities plays with Harmonica icon Charlie Musselwhite; Piano and Bassist Pete Sears; and drummer Wally Ingram. Guitarist Jimmy Vivino guests.
This is a great new album from Gravenities featuring songs that have never before been recorded. Once again Gravenities proves himself to be a timeless source of joy.
