Bernard Allison
Luther’s Blues
Ruf Records
Ruf Records is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary. They began by bringing Luther Allison’s music to the world. This two-disc set features 20 stellar tracks from his son, Bernard Allison, each one a Luther Allison composition previously released on one of Bernard’s many albums. “I made a promise…that I’d always include at least one or two of my dad’s songs on every album I record”, in order that I keep his music alive.
Although Bernard has two Blues Music Award nominations his father Luther was the master. Luther has 31 Blues Music Award nominations winning sixteen times. In 2019 Ruf Records released a live CD/DVD as part of their “Songs From The Road” series and it should be seen by every Blues enthusiest.
Bernard was born in Chicago and moved back and forth between there and Florida. He listened to his father’s albums when they were apart and he accompanied Luther to blues festivals in the early 1970’s. There he was introduced to Muddy Waters, Hound Dog Taylor, and Albert King.
Bernard joined Koko Taylor’s touring band and was further mentored by Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He formed his first band Bernard Allison and Back Talk while remaining with Koko. He became bandleader of his father’s touring band in 1989 and recorded his first album “The Next Generation” while in Paris. Bernatd and his father continued to collaborate and co-write.
Three of Bernard’s covers first appeared on 1998’s “Times Are Changing” also on Ruf Records. Two of the selections come from “Across The Water” and “Storms of Life” both on Tone-Cool Records; two from “Chills & Thrills” on Jazzhaus Records; and two from “Let It Go” on Ruf Records. My favorite album from Bernard is 2015’s “In The Mix” also on the Jazzhaus imprint. Bernard recorded his own “Songs From The Road” in 2020.
Bernard is keeping the memory of his father alive for us to enjoy. This CD is highly recommended.
