The Sugar Darlings are an up and coming band out of Montreal formed in 2020. They are the winner of the Quebec to Memphis competition representing the Montreal Blues Society at the 2024 International Blues Challenge. They were also nominated for “New Group Of The Year” at the Maple Blues Awards, Canada’s equivalent to our Blues Music Awards.
On the opening track Miche Love Dennery ask’s the question “Why” with a voice that has both power and clarity. There is infectious guitar from Paul Lucyk, while Kaven Jalbert, who played with Dawn Tyler Watson, appears on tenor and baritone, saxophones. Jalbert was nominated for “Horn Player of The Year” at the Maple Blues Awards in 2019. The rhythm section includes Neil Robinson, bass; and Danick Tardif, drums.
The title track opens with a walking bass line. Miche’s voice balances classic soul and R ‘n B, with Gospel similiar to icons like Aretha Franklin and Etta James. The group’s collaborative songwriting exhibits an immersive sophistication. Other highlights include “Grow Up”, “Funky Darling”, and “Love Is All I Need”. In fact every song is a gem.
The album has been available since April 2023 but is now being released in the States. “Thirsty For Your Love” says it all, “so, get ready and take a sip”.
